Of a Starless Sky - NaNoWriMo Excerpt The sky was black. There were no stars, no moon; it could have been a mass of clouds that was obscuring the lights of the midnight, and that's what everyone told each other. Look at the clouds tonight. They must be awfully thick. I wonder if we'll get snow? Yet everyone knew they only trying to fool their neighbor as much as themselves. There were not any clouds.
A solemn pretty face looked out of the window at the wall of blackness. The woman wore a long black dress, reminiscent of the Victorian styles. A small dark iron crown sat on her head. Her ebony hair was obscured by a thin black veil, except for the few strands that insisted on dangling down, occasionally brushing against her nose. She did not bother to brush them back.
"How many more bands do we have left?" she asked the figure at the back of the room. She was looking for firelight; a sign of a camp or small group of soldiers, hiding out in the deep of the forest, straggles of survivors. There had

The obnoxious monotone was cut short as a fist slammed down on the red alarm clock, abruptly halting its routine morning wake-up call. Two bleary green eyes peered out from under the comforter, squinting at the neon numbers that flashed across the clock face, then just as quickly disappeared again under the warm sheets.
It felt like only a second later that the blankets were harshly pulled away, revealing a stubbornly curled-up ball of red and purple.
"Rise and shine, Evey. It's an half an hour past ten. Mom said."
"Goway." A hand deftly reached out and groped in vain for the missing coverings, which were being held far out of reach by the occupant's younger sister. "Is Saturday."
"I know, but you need to get up and start babysitting me because Mom has to work today, remember?" said Karie, lifting the blankets higher away from the searching fingers. "And Chase is on the phone."
